How can I Balance the Work among my Vehicles?

WorkWave Route Manager is designed to make efficient routes that minimize your Costs. One of these assumed Costs is Vehicle usage. If it is efficient for your plan, Route Manager will put more Orders, time, and/or mileage on one Vehicle or set of Vehicles than others.

This may make sense mathematically (and create a beautifully efficient route!), but if your Drivers need work to stay happy or your business needs its fleet on the road at all times this can pose a challenge. You can use different settings inside of Route Manager to re-distribute the workload and balance the routes out.

The important thing to remember is that balancing the routes out means both giving some Vehicles/Drivers more work while giving others less.

The Problem:

In this example, only 5 of the 9 Vehicles were assigned routes for the day. 

 

Solutions:

Create an Order limit using load capacity

You can create a hard limit on the amount of Orders any one Vehicle can serve by creating Load Capacities on your Vehicles and your Orders. This will spread the “extra” Orders around to Vehicles that are not utilized.

1. Go to your Vehicle settings and go to the “Capacity” section

 

2. Click the “+” button and add a Capacity named “Stops”. Enter in the maximum amount of Orders you want the Vehicle to take on.
 

3. Do this for all of your Vehicles.

4. Upload your orders with a Load called “Stops” and have “1” for each Order, or edit all of your Orders once they are in Route Manager.

 

5. Rebuild your routes
 

The routes now have more balance. If you need to you can drag and drop any other Orders around to balance even further. Adjust the Load limit on your Vehicles as needed.

Set a Maximum Working Time

You can also balance routes by reducing the amount of hours your Vehicles work. This will force Orders to be moved back around to honor time constraints. You can’t balance routes without some Vehicles working less.

1. Edit your Vehicles and add a Work up to time in the "Hours" section.

 

2. Rebuild your routes.
 

 
Adjust the hours as needed to serve all of your Orders
